EARLY MEDIEVAL STAMPED POTTERY

This class will be an introduction to the pottery associated with Anglian and Saxon communities in Britain from around 450 to 650 CE. We will discuss the associated forms, production methods, and various styles of ornamentation, with a focus on the decorative stamped pottery tradition that originated in continental Europe and continued to flourish and develop in Britain. We will mainly look at slides of the original vessels, but I will also have a few replica pots on hand, as well as reconstructions of many of the stamp dies used to decorate the pots.
BARRELS AND BARREL AGING

This class will explore the use of casks (barrels) in period, the care of modern barrels, and some of the uses the modern brewer can put barrels to use. Limited small samples may be available depending on class size.
