Summarizing effectively is an incredibly valuable skill for anyone working with name submissions: consulting heralds, commenters, and Kingdom Submission Heralds. Summarizing is a skill that takes repetition to develop. This class introduces a summarization method and gives you some repetitions using it with example submissions - good, bad, and ugly.

Based on English Manuscripts from the mid 14th c to mid 15 c. In this hands-on class, participants will develop a ductus including common ligatures and contractions. time will also be allowed to practice.

Participants must have some familiarity with calligraphy. Bring your favorite pen-staff! Ink, nibs, and paper will be provided. Maximum class size of 20.

Manuscripts had been illuminated in Flanders for centuries before the signature Flemish style appeared in the 15th CE and made Flanders a powerhouse in manuscript illumination. But how did Flanders go from being a little distinguished creator of manuscripts to exporting manuscripts across Europe? This class will discuss the history of Flemish manuscripts, what makes manuscripts distinctly "Flemish", and the tools of the trade.

Basic introduction to pigments and how they're made into paint, including a practical. If participants have pigments they would like to make into paint, they're encouraged to bring them if they're non-toxic. I will have some to share, and containers to take home paint in.

Whose Court Is it, Anyway?: What Heralds Can Learn About Status from Improve Theatre

As a court herald, how do you make all the players in court look good - without upstaging them? this hands-on workshop draws on the ideas of Keith Johnstone, a key figure in the development of improvisational theatre. Using exercises and practice, we will explore this concepts of status and status transactions through the role of the court herald. Do you tend to adopt "high" or "low" status? How do you play "over" or "under" someone? What do you do to "raise" or "lower" other people in court? We will play a few improv games together that will help you make your court partners look good.

Portuguese records have information about West African cultures, including documents written in Portuguese by Kongolese rulers. this class explores names from multiple West African traditions from period Portuguese and Spanish records. We'll also briefly discuss names recorded in West African Arabic texts, both those that are Islamic in content and those that are not.

This is a hands on class to learn & practice rubrication, the addition of "doodles, fiddly-bits, and flourishes" to your illuminated works. We will look at examples, identify recurring figures, and then spend most of the time drawing/creating them.

Simultaneously, any scribes who have made a scribal trading card (2.5"x3.5" on any SCA paper/material featuring any SCA scribal techniques) who want to trade their own pieces of art can also come and share their own pieces with others.

Hands On Trying Out Micrography

Micrography is using very small writing shaped to create pictures using words instead of lines.. In this class we will discuss the history and examples, then break out the tools and try out making tiny writing into pictures. Participants are expected to be old enough to handle small writing tools.

Have you ever wanted to be up close and personal with period manuscripts and incunabula (printed books with illuminations)?  One of the class sessions will be hosted by the Raynor Library Special Collections at Marquette University.  The picture shown here is from Northshield Heralds and Scribes event in 2018 where attendees had a similar opportunity.  The bindings on these amazing books are as lovely and interesting as their contents.  We hope that folk will join us to view these lovely pieces.

Sign-ups for the Special Manuscript Session are closed, and the seats are full.  If you wish to be placed on the waiting list for a seat if anyone has to cancel, please email kwhss2023@gmail.com with your SCA and modern names.  You must be pre-registered for the event to be placed on the waiting list.

We will be working with the keepers of the collection to arrange for an additional viewing session for those who live locally, at a time that is not during KWHSS--if you are interested in this alternate session (instead of or in addition to the one during KWHSS), you can email the event team with "Local Manuscript Session Request" in the subject line.
